Dubbed as one of the greatest Tamil movies ever made, Sethu stars Vijay and Jyothika in the lead roles. Directed by S. Shankar and produced by Kavithalaya Productions, it tells a story of two lovers who fail to marry each other because of societal pressures. The film was released on 22 November 1999 with its dubbed version released worldwide as Robot which won huge acclaims from all over the world. It was later dubbed in Telugu as Bhairava Dweepam. Sethu is the highest grossing Tamil film of 1999, with a final worldwide gross of 8.73 crore (US$2,500,000). The film won several awards including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil at 50th National Film Awards in 2000. The film won three awards at the 46th Filmfare Awards South including Best Actor for Vijay's performance. It also received two awards each at the 6th International Tamil Film Awards and 52nd Kerala State Film Awards including Best Actress for Jyothika's performance. It has been included in IBN Live's list of "100 greatest Indian films of all time. Dev (Vijay) is a young man who works at his uncle's farm. He loves Anu (Jyothika), daughter of his uncle's friend, but cannot marry her because of the social stigma attached to her imaginary illness. Dev also works in the watch factory where his elder brother, Krishnamurthy (Sathyamurthy), is a supervisor. He loves Saroja (Saroja Bayam), a beautiful girl working in the company. Krishnamurthy, who has married Saroja for money, does not accept Dev's love for Anu. When Saroja comes to Dev's house, Dev asks her for a date which she accepts. Soon, Krishnamurthy learns that Saroja is in love with Dev. He blackmails Dev into breaking off his relation with Anu by telling him that he planned to marry Saroja but when she revealed her love for him he rejected her because she was the daughter of his employer. Dev complies and tells Anu that he is abandoning her because of his affection towards Saroja. After this, Krishnamurthy has Tirupathi (Prabhu), who is an attempt to physically harm Anu in front of Dev. Dev accepts Saroja's love without realizing that she is the daughter of his uncle's friend. Dev, Anu and Saroja are caught in a romantic triangle. Dev tells Anu that he already loves another woman, even though he still loves her. On the wedding day of Kataravalli (Malavika), another employee in the factory who is also in love with Dev, Dev sees Anu walk into the factory. Dev goes to find her but finds out that she stumbled into the factory because of fatigue after walking all night long to meet him.
